Media Engagement 101

Before You Get Started

Building equality and acceptance starts with you! Your storytelling, sharing your message and reaching your target audience continues to move the needle no LGBTQ acceptance throughout the globe, and the GLAAD Media Institute is here to help. Before you begin a course, check out GLAAD’s resources.

GLAAD Media Reference GuideGLAAD’s Media Reference Guide offers education and guidance on language and terminology, how to tell LGBTQ people’s stories with dignity and respect, and guidelines for respectful storytelling for LGBTQ people. Written as a journalist style guide, this can be handy for proving some of the most basic guidelines for talking about the LGBTQ community. Share it with local media outlets, especially when you are urging them to issue a correction. Provide it as a resource for friends and family who are confused or overwhelmed at LGBTQ language and terminology.

Additionally, GLAAD has several resources on our Publications page for the latest in research, best practices, and information about issues relevant to the LGBTQ community. Please consider joining GLAAD as a member and/or follow us on social media (@glaad). Thank you all so much. We are thrilled to work together again.
